How to setup a schedule

Backup schedules are defined separately for each backup set. To view a backup set's schedule, double click on the backup set, and then click on the Schedule tab. From here you control the schedule:

The first thing you will have to do is to click the 'Create new task' button, and name your scheduled task. Once you have done that a scheduled task (which is an entry in the Windows Task Scheduler that tells Windows to start different application at certain times or specified intervals) will be created. Select the second tab on the window that pops up:

First click the 'New' button to add a a trigger and then use the lower part of the window to define when you want the backup set to be launched. Press 'Ok' when you are done. The schedule setup is now finished and the backup set will start automatically according to your settings.

Note for Windows XP/NT users: In order for the scheduled task to run you are required to enter your user name and password (for your Windows login account). Go to the Control Panel/Scheduled Tasks and double click on the task. Enter the login information in the appropriate fields. If your Windows account is not password protected you will have to add a password to your account. In order to do this go to the Control Panel/Users and change your settings.

Note on schedulers: NH Backup does not come with a scheduler of it's own. It uses the Windows scheduler which is a very powerful tool and ensures reliability while not adding the drag on the system that additional schedulers do. You can add, edit and delete scheduled jobs through NH Backup, but it is still the Windows Scheduler that is behind it all. (Therefore you can also use the Windows Scheduler directly to handle NH Backup schedules, although this will not separate jobs for each backup set, the way NH Backup does.)

Tip on tasks and triggers: You can have many schedule jobs associated with the same backup set. They will all be listed in the list shown above. All these jobs have triggers that set off at preset conditions. A Job can have several triggers, and therefore it is usually not necessary to have more than one scheduled task per backup set: instead of adding more scheduled tasks to a backup set, you should consider adding more triggers to your scheduled task.
